If you had to/could replace your DD today with something else what would it be. This has to be a realistic option. I mean sure pie in the sky I’d buy a Golf R in Mars Red, but in reality I can’t afford a 70 0 dollar a month car payment. And I don’ t want a 6 year auto loan anyway.
what a fabulous looking car.
My wants
Manual, AWD/RWD, FUN, hatch or wagon. my e90 is a good 3 out of 4.
My Needs
Able to pay off in 4 years which means something under 15k.
space for 4-5 people and cargo, but not necessarily at the same time.
Reliability .
Decent in snow.
My E90 is such a great blending of my wants and needs,AND the all powerful budget. I would love for my next car to offer better fuel economy, and easy access to cargo space.
Finding the car i need that I also want MORE and my e90 is just about impossible.
If i had to replace my e90 today I think my most likely option besides another one would be. I don’ t know. Nothing fits. WRX is the mostly obvious but I dont trust them. Everything else is FWD or too expensive .
hang on I found a wildcard.you have to make a sacrifice somewhere. I’ll take mine on the reliability side.

I have a friend in a different state who owns one of those Audis, and that is enough to keep me up at night worrying about that engine. It’s glorious, but that’d be a very tough maintenance pill to swallow.
I am constantly thinking of what my next DD would be as well, and have a very similar budget and requirements. Always keep coming back to 3 series or WRX on my end too, and I have the same concerns about the Subaru...and the current gen is a tad boring (although much more civilized) for my taste. From a value and fun perspective a prior gen STi hatch may be a much more interesting proposition .
Maybe a Lexus depending on where prices are at for something relatively fun, but ISFs are holding their value surprisingly well and the GS-Fs are too new to be cheap still, and not sure how far down they’ll ever come.
I just bought a cheap fun E46 ZHP and decided to not worry about it, socking away a good chunk of my budget for a later day.

I’ve considered the option of going crossover/suv as well. Problem is the only one I kinda want is an AWD Mini Coutryman S and the newer ones are to expensive, while the older ones are... older Minis

If I had to replace my Mazda5 6MT today I’d probably find a used one in that same spec. I like minivans, manual transmissions and cars that are actually kind of fun, and since there aren’t any others that meet these criteria new I’d have to buy used. It is more likely that cars configured like this are enthusiast owned, and therefore more likely to be in better shape than the same vehicle with a non-manual cog swopper.
If I had to buy new I’d go right back to Mazda and get a new Mazda3 hatch, manual transmission of course, even though the back end is a little weird to my eyes. I figure that it’s the closest to what I currently drive, and I really like my current car. I don’t need a minivan, I just happen to like them, particularly the sliding doors. Other minivans have forgotten the ‘mini’ part and aren’t terribly entertaining to toss around , so no other currently available one would be a suitable replacement IMHO.

I’m thinking about getting another Challenger before too long.
I got rid of my last one because I was driving my company car most of the time, and it didn’t seem to make sense to keep making payments on something that sat in the driveway 5-6 days a week.
But, new job as of Monday that no longer includes a car has me thinking maybe I should get something newer than the beater I bought to keep as a second car, so maybe get another. This time, preowned instead of new, to take advantage of someone else’s depreciation, but still a V6 SXT Plus for the fuel economy advantage over the R/T.

That’s difficult! I have a 2005 ZHP with a scant 66000 miles on it but it’s kind of a maintenance glutton. I don’t mind though. I also have an old ‘85 4Runner project. If I had my druthers, I’d honestly be tempted to go for one of the new Jeep Gladiators. Though I have no idea what they will cost. I’d opt for a lower trim in red, and I’m not ready to give up manuals yet so that’s a go.

If going with new cars only?
I’d look at the Civic Si, G70 Manual, Veloster N, and ‘19 Miata club.
If including used?
C7 Corvette, Evora (S? Maybe?) if I didn’t care that I can’t get it serviced anywhere within 500+ miles, or maybe an ATS-V.
I currently do about 500 miles per week of driving, so unfortunately comfort and fuel economy are much more important than the pure fun I want to prioritize . As is the ability to carry at least some luggage. So the Miata would be... difficult.

That is assuming I can’t drive our other currently licensed cars. If I had to burn through our other cars first and that the 05 Mini is dead the order would go Chevy Truck, Evo VIII, Mustang GT future LeMons car and the 90 Mini.

Not too long ago I was looking at used GTI’s pretty hard and I would still really like one. For now though saving for an acreage is much higher on the priority list so the Cobalt will remain the DD. If I were to buy a new (to me) vehicle in the near future though it will likely be a truck as mine is at the age where I’m starting to lose some trust in it for longer trips. Ignoring realities again, other cars I’ve considered lately; Bronco (full size any gen), another 924, or a 944, AMC Eagle (wagon acceptable, SX4 preferr ed), bump side F-100.

Other than my probably irrational distrust of VW reliability , that’d actually be a good idea. GTI’s would be on my list if not for that distrust.
Although I hadn’t even realized they still made the TDI’s after their whole emissions thing.

I think both the wagon and alltrack can be had in manual but not all trims(unfortunately, I’m realizing I’d much rather have a car my wife can drive if we have a third car) . I’d be really interested in a 4Motion sportwagen or alltrack but the used market isn’t very good yet and I’m just not at a point wheee I’d spring for a new car .
Not to mention I’d be tempted to do an ecu tune and dsg tune right away
; so why not get a GTI, give up the space and get the speed and transmission tuning I really want.

Yup, but it's still available to police fleets.

Should be the other way around. Or at least offer it as an option. They already have the parts.

The OP is considering going from an E90 to a Golf.
I have an MK7 Golf, and I am very happy with it. But, if the gods came down and crushed all the MK7 Golfs and burned down the Golf factory, then I would start looking for an E90 (technically E91) wagon with a manual transmission.

mazda 3. maybe a 2019. My commute is 25 min highway, 15 sitting in traffic. I got a volt as its a boring drive, but there are times I would love a smooth manual even if I would only ever use 6th and 1 st

The lack of a manual option in the new Ranger is annoying. If I were buying a pickup, I would probably spend a lot of time complaining about the lack of a manual option in the Ridgeline and F150, and then I would settle for a manual Tacoma.

For quite a bit, my go-to after the FR-S has been the WRX STI, but lately I’ve been thinking the M2 Comp etition or the Cayman GT4 wouldn’t be bad either.

This is an interesting question. I’m at a crossroads in my life right now, and I wasn’t planning on seriously buying for a while.
I think if I lost either the Crosstour or the IS tomorrow, I’d probably take the insurance and throw it towards a Fiesta ST, a stick Mazda 2 , or priciest case probably a Civic Type R.
Im too far from my z06 goal and I’m speccing a replacement for the Honda as well at some point.

I almost bought a 79 244 with the like all of the available IPD suspension and bracing, 4 speed with working OD, and decent Virgos for $1500. I really should’ve bought that one...

Yeah which I just don’t understand. Sedans are stupid, and SUVs are a waste of money.

The funny thing is I drive a sedan that burns fuel as bad as some SUVs at least by the dollar, since it uses premium.

So your sedan is then both stupid and a waste of money?

.... yes, but it was cheaper upfront then a Wagon variant of the same car. It’s way more fun to drive than any SUV, and it’s better in snow than your average sedan.
